Session Impact - advice for tutors
What is Impact?
The value we add to a student during their 1 or 2 hours with us each session.
The difference we make to a student’s learning.
The positive changes we have influenced in a student as a result of our coaching.
Impact can be tangible— for example a student’s ability to explain a scientific phenomenon, complete a Math problem with minimal guidance, or plan an essay using a strategy you taught them.
Impact can be intangible— for example, a student’s willingness to ‘give it another go’ with encouragement, awareness of a new technique, or demonstration of previously unobserved confidence.
Why TRack Impact?
For Students: We model to students important self-regulated learning strategies they can use in their day-to-day lives. It helps us to measure student progress so that we can work out ways to help students improve and capitalise on their strengths.
For Parents: Five provides a service that parents pay for. We owe it to all stakeholders to justify returns on these investments.
For Management: It will help us to identify our strengths as a team and areas we need to work on. This could lead to more customised tutor development programmes.
For the Community: To broadcast ‘good news’ stories for the community to see the good work Five is doing and to gather lessons from these stories.
For Tutors: Waking up each morning thinking about the positive difference you’re making to someone’s life is a lovely habit to embrace. In addition, your future employers will want to know what you have done and the impact you have made at your previous work places.
How will impact be reported?
Our Goals: Set aside a few minutes at the start of each session to identify goals with students. Students will absolutely need to own the goals but younger students may need help articulating them. Consider the use of the following prompt: “In the time that we have, what would you like to work on with me?”
Our Achievements: Set aside a few minutes at the end of each session to celebrate achievements and to work out next steps. Consider discussing with students: “In the time that we had, what have we done to help us achieve Our Goals?”
Impact: Write brief dot points to document the impact, taking note of before-after changes and areas to work on next.
